Christine Brennan from USA Today discusses the Olympic Qualifying tournament on NPR.

She talks about how the tournament is highlighting the disparity between women’s programs and how it might encourage developing programs to actually develop their programs.  She says it outright: “Frankly, their national federations just don’t care about women’s soccer.”  Preach.

Also some discussion about how interest in a few USWNT players peaked after the WWC, but WPS is still struggling.  Old news for us, but nice to hear on a national news program.

I am confused by this picture, yet also charmed by it.

Seriously, love Abby for going with a suit here. They all look great (though I wish Carli Lloyd had brushed her hair).

Ok, so I’m sure I will get some haters but hear me out. When I see Hope’s pictures in 2011 “Body Issue” for ESPN all I could think about was the ESPNW Summit board interview with Abby Wambach, Lauren Cheney and Alex Morgan.

During the interview they said defiantly realize what a large fan base they have now and how they inspire so many people that they need to watch what they say and how the present themselves.

Abby said now at the end of the day it’s up to them to decide what to do with the power and yes it is a “power” in a general sense because it now gives them a larger platform to speak and inspire people with. Not only the things she’s does on the field but, off the field as well…weather it is in charities or just encouraging people to be out and active.

Chaney also adds that to sustain a following in women’s sports that they need to be respected for their game. Not to be followed just because they have the best hair, that they are pretty or because they are on DWTS.
It’s a respect issue all across the board, even with the WNBA. They are in finals right now and they don’t have the following they deserve either.
The power that the uswnt possess right now should not plateau. They should continue striving to make a point that women’s sports are just as good as the mens.

In its closing Abby added that ” ESPN invests millions of dollars every year because its the right thing to do and I am tired of people investing in women’s sports because its the right thing to do! I want people to invest in women’s sports because its the smart thing to do. Its lucrative! it will make you money!!”

Seeing Hope 98% nude in these photos angers me. Yes the issue is to spotlight the fact that athletic bodies can be very sexy; but, do we not already find these women’s(/men’s) bodies attractive?? Tell me I am lyin…I mean have you all seen tumblr since the World Cup??

All I am saying is that Hope’s choices so far disappoint me. I would like to see her using her status in less flasher ways. Personally, I would really like to see her work with today’s youth about becoming active and making healthy choices.

1) Personally, I don’t think Hope Solo really gives a fuck how you feel about the photos or about her post-WC life choices: here’s why.
2) Going off of that, if she finds it empowering to pose for this issue, your opinion is moot. You, I, nor anyone else have any say in what another woman finds empowering. Stop policing what people do with their bodies or time.
3) Why aren’t you going on about the dudes who posed naked for this issue? What about the male athletes on Dancing With the Stars? Why are you implicitly holding women to a standard of not making “flasher” choices while the men are not?
4) I feel like female athletes are placed on a pedestal of being a role model and that is an attitude that I find really gross and it is expressed in this post. You want women’s sports to be as recognized as men’s? Then why is there this gender differential? No one expects every male athlete to be an illustrious example of a human being. This is a common phenomenon - women who do something have to be better than the all the men to be recognized. FUCK THAT. I want controversial figures in my sports. I want villains in my sports. All the everyone’s a nice girl shit is so boring.
5) Please explain to me how women’s sports are not just as good as men’s right now.
6) The truth of this matter is more media exposure is going to pull more people in to watching games and being fans. Going on a rather popular national TV show and posing in a very popular issue of a popular sports magazine is going to generate a lot of media attention, which is what the USWNT needs to pull a lot of new fans out of their situation. You can’t have it both ways. Lauren Cheney visiting heart patients at the hospital doesn’t pull that coverage.

It’s Hope Solo’s body and she can do whatever the fuck she wants with it. Co-sign everything J said. Also, “they defiantly realize”? Just because it doesn’t set off spell check doesn’t mean it’s the right word.
